Europe Tours – Tips for Resting Easy on Your Overnight Flight

For Europe tours to London, Paris, Rome and beyond, you’ll most likely take an overnight flight across the Atlantic. And since you’ll arrive at your destination fairly early in the morning with less sleep than you may be used to, it might be challenging to find the energy to hit the ground running. For some of us, pure adrenaline and the anticipation of landing in a new place is enough to keep us awake for the entire flight. If you’re the type of person who can’t trick your internal body clock into premature slumber, here are some tips to prepare for your overnight flight to ensure your body gets the rest it deserves.

  • Wake Up Earlier
On the morning of your departure, rise an hour or two earlier to prepare your body for an earlier bedtime.

  • Hit the Gym
Exercise can calm nerves and help you rest easier overall. Try going for a run or brisk walking the day of your flight.

  • Avoid Caffeine
If you can’t function without your daily dose of caffeine, at least try to avoid it in the afternoon so your body and mind can naturally wind down before you board the plane.

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing
Plan your plane outfit according to what you feel most comfortable in while also taking into account varying temperatures as it can often fluctuate depending on altitude. Layers are key!

  • Skip the In-Flight Movie
Consider skipping the in-flight movie as it might keep you more alert and awake longer than you had anticipated.

  • Stick to your bedtime routine
If your normal bedtime routine consists of removing your contacts, brushing your teeth or reading a book, stick to it. These events might give your body the signal that it’s time for bed.

No matter how many Zzzs you ultimately catch during your flight overseas, the very best thing you can do for yourself and for jet lag is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. And remember, with so much to see and experience on your European tour, you can always sleep when you get home!
